Why your business doesn't show up on Google Maps

Nine out of ten local businesses we audit have the same four problems. None of them require an agency to fix, though most owners never find out they exist.

When someone in your town searches for what you sell, Google shows three businesses in a map box before anything else. Landing in that box is worth more than any ad budget you're likely to have. Missing it usually comes down to housekeeping rather than strategy.

1. Your profile is incomplete

Google ranks profiles it has confidence in. Confidence comes from completeness: correct category, full address, hours including holidays, services listed individually, and at least ten real photographs of the premises and the work.

Set aside an hour and fill in every field. Most businesses stop after the address and wonder why a competitor with worse reviews outranks them.

2. Your name, address and phone number disagree

If your website footer says one thing, your Facebook page another, and the local directory a third, Google discounts all of them. Pick one exact format — including how you abbreviate the road and whether you use the landline or mobile — and make every listing match it character for character.

3. You have no recent reviews

Review recency matters as much as review count. Twenty reviews from three years ago carry less weight than six from the last two months. Ask every satisfied customer, in person, on the day. A short link sent over WhatsApp converts far better than a card on the counter.

Reply to all of them, including the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a complaint reassures the next reader far more than a wall of five stars.

4. Your website doesn't back up the claim

Google cross-checks your profile against your site. If your profile says you do bathroom fittings in Charkhi Dadri and your website only says “quality products, best service”, there's nothing to verify. Give each service its own page, name the towns you cover, and embed your map.

Do these in order

  • Claim and complete the Google Business Profile
  • Standardise your name, address and phone everywhere
  • Start asking for reviews this week, and reply to every one
  • Add a page per service and per area you serve
  • Post an update to the profile every fortnight

Give it eight to twelve weeks. Local rankings move slowly, then all at once.
